Nuffield Health Bournemouth Hospital is ‘pleased’ to announce that full knee replacements are now available at the hospital using the Mako robotic-arm state-of-the-art technology available in only a handful of UK hospitals.

Partial knee replacements and total hip replacements have been offered at the hospital since September, with total knee replacements now available. Using a combination of advanced technology and market-leading implants, patients who opt for robotic-assisted surgery benefit from a quicker, less painful recovery. Nuffield Bournemouth is the only hospital on the south coast to have invested in this pioneering technology which provides assisted orthopaedic reconstructive surgery, under the guidance of leading consultants.

Orthopaedic consultant Mr Paul Pavlou specialises in knee replacements and underwent intensive training with the medical device manufacturer Stryker to be able to perform robotic-assisted surgery. He also completed a yearlong fellowship in Auckland, New Zealand working with similar computer navigated medical technology.

Mr Paul Pavlou, said: “We have performed a number of successful robotic-arm assisted procedures since we started working with the Mako technology in September, and I’m pleased that we are now able to offer total knee replacements using the same advanced technology.

“During operations I will have full control of the robotic-arm but using this technology allows us to be more accurate and minimises any risk of error. Stryker Mako implants should last 15 years or more which is around five years more than traditional implants, which is of course of great benefit to the patient.”
