In summer 2019, Emma Carmody (26), born and raised in Bristol, moved back home.
Two and a half years ago, in January 2017, Emma joined Amazon as a Graduate Area Manager in Manchester after completing her degree in Sociology at Bristol University.
During her time at Amazon, Emma has managed teams in operations, supporting them in delivering for customers and now supports associate development and well-being as a HR Advisor.
“I loved the challenge of joining a company like Amazon right out of university, and being an Area manager was exciting. I loved managing people, understanding how my team could work better and helping team members to develop. I realised that it was this aspect of my job that I enjoyed the most. It was my first priority, so I joined the HR team onsite.”
The new 500,000 sq. ft. site, which features cutting-edge Amazon Robotics technology, opened last month. Since then Emma has welcomed more than 1,000 new permanent employees into the building working across a diverse number of roles.
“I remember the announcement of this site so well” said Emma, talking about news of the site coming to Bristol. “All I could think was – this is it – I’m coming home” she continued.
Pay in Bristol starts at £10.50 an hour and employees are offered a comprehensive benefits package, including private medical insurance, life assurance, income protection, subsidised meals, an employee discount, which combined are worth more than £700 annually, as well as a company pension plan.

“It almost feels too good to be true.” said Emma, “in December 2018 I applied to join the HR apprenticeship scheme. I got it and started in April! Then the opportunity to help with the launch of Bristol came through, and I got that as well. It’s been great to support the site with its launch” .
“There really is no price I can put on the experience I’ve gained over the last few years. I’m thrilled to be back in Bristol and still with Amazon.”
