Cholesterol and values. When is the norm?

What is your cholesterol? This question sounds regularly from our doctor during each preventive examination. Cholesterol is wrongly described as the most harmful fat substance in our body. However, the truth remains that it is necessary to distinguish between both good (HDL) cholesterol and its terrible (LDL) variant. What are the values of cholesterol in the norm, and what is the risk for our body and overall health? You can read this and much more in this article.

What is cholesterol?

Cholesterol is rightly referred to as the primary component (part) of the human body. It has a primary function in the formation of tissue cell membranes, is essential in the production of hormones, and also aids digestion. It is impossible to completely remove it from the body because it is found in most ingested foods, such as butter, eggs, cheese, and animal fats. Not to mention that our body creates it.

What is possible is to influence its production and quality by various diets or a more moderate cleansing of the body. Including diets, we can reduce fatty and fatty foods in the diet, drink less sweetened drinks, and replace them with glasses with a higher intake of trace elements – especially magnesium (magnesium).

Cholesterol values

The presence of fatty substances (including cholesterol) in the blood is decisive and crucial only if the blood is taken from a vein on an empty stomach, after milder fasting, at a maximum interval of twelve hours. It is ideal if we do not take in too much greasy food the day before the collection. Total cholesterol should be up to 5.2 mmol/liter in an adult. Slightly increased values are at the level of 5.2 to 6.5 mmol/liter, the increased threat is at 6.5 to 7.8 mmol/liter, and the highest threat for us is at the level above 7.8 mmol/liter.

Favorable values of “good” HDL cholesterol are above 1.3 mmol / liter (in contrast, concentrations are below 1 mmol / liter). In the case of “bad” LDL cholesterol, the calculated value should be up to 3.9 mmol/liter. The risk is moderate at concentrations from 4 to 5 mmol/liter, and the higher risk is above five mmol/liter. In this regard, it is still decisive what percentage of total cholesterol represents “good” HDL. The optimal level is more than 25 percent. The lower the percentage value, the higher the risk (the critical level is below 20 percent HDL of total cholesterol)

What is the Slovak average? The average value of adult cholesterol in the Slovak Republic is about six mmol/liter, which is considered too high if we add other risk factors such as hypertension (high blood pressure), low lifestyle associated with smoking and drinking alcohol.
