First Key Hereford, a supported community living service, has thrilled service users by hosting a superhero-themed activity day, filled with colourful costumes and fun challenges.

Staff at First Key Hereford put on the event to help raise awareness for people living with disabilities and to show their admiration for the ‘everyday heroes’ that use First Key Hereford’s services for support.

Throughout the day, service users took part in a range of activities and challenges, including the Gruffalo trail at Queenswood country park, circuits around the garden, egg and spoon races, and a number of other sports day activities.

First Key Hereford provides support at home and in the community to disabled adults and organised the event as a way of getting involved in the new ‘At Home Superheroes’ campaign announced by Superhero Tri; a popular Channel 4 show that sees people with disabilities swim, bike and run a para-tri event. The team at First Key Hereford worked hard to ensure that service users were still able to experience the thrills of the UK’s only disability sport series, despite the postponement of the popular show earlier in the summer.

John Davis, who lives with cerebral palsy , was part of the First Key Hereford team that attended Superhero Tri in 2019 and has spoken of his delight at the organisation’s home-made event this year. He said: “It’s a little sad that we can’t attend Superhero Tri this year, as the event makes me feel really proud of myself. Last year I took part in the swim, and loved it, even if the lake was freezing! Although it would have been great to go back, it was super exciting to be doing it all at home. I spent the whole of the week before making my costume and it was great to show it off on the day.”

“I can’t thank the staff at First Key Hereford enough for the effort they put into this event. These guys really make you realise that you can adapt and overcome whatever life throws your way if you have a little faith and self-belief!”

Lottie Hudson, service manager at First Key Hereford, said: “We’re delighted to support this great cause and help bring more visibility to people living with disabilities. Superhero Tri epitomises the strength of our service users and it felt only fitting to recreate this fantastic event for the people here at First Key Hereford.”

“It was a fantastic day with a brilliant atmosphere and brilliant people. Their energy was truly inspirational. Everyone was amazing and I would like to thank everyone that took the time to join in and help make it such a wonderful day.”
